S6019 Stress Path and Cyclic Triaxial Testing


Triaxicon Introduction

The Geotest system employs an open ended triaxial cell developed for stress path testing by S.M. Sebestyen in the late sixties.

Electro-pneumatic pressure regulators, controlled by computer software, accept commands and perform prescribed tests in accordance with directions initiated by the operator before the test begins.

Performing a test necessitates the technician only to prepare and set up the specimen and then answer various questions posed by the user friendly computer software. This enables a step to step relationship in an interactive mode to be established between the computer software and the operator. The computer directs the Triaxicon to perform the test and to run it under conditions previously selected, collect the data generated, calculate and plot the results in familiar formats.

By exposing both the cap and the pedestal to the atmosphere, the lateral pressure is prevented from adding to the axial stress directly. Independent control of the lateral and axial stress then makes it possible to follow any desired stress path. This is not presently possible with other systems.

The cell wall is clear acrylic and an open frame is used to secure the cell to the base.

I would like to emphasize the most unique feature of S6019. This is the open ended triaxial cell. A few others have attempted similar systems without any marked success. Only Stephan Sebestyen’s design has held up over time.With our design the lateral (cell) stress does not affect the axial stress nor does the axial affect the lateral stress. Any stress path can be followed.

Stress Measurement

The pedestal is designed as a hydraulic load cell to measure total axial pressure inside the cell to eliminate difficulties associated with friction and the possible inertial effect in case of dynamic loading.

Strain Measurement

An EDDI, supported by 2 stress free columns mounted on the loading ram, rests directly on the center of the specimen cap. It measures only the true change in length of the specimen eliminating all problems associated with system compliance.

Normal Load System

Axial stress is applied by a piston with frictionless rolling seal and controlled by a dynamic electro-pneumatic pressure regulator. Software is provided for controlled rate of strain, controlled rate of stress and controlled pore pressure gradient loading. Load capacity is 1700 lbf (8.5 kN).

For cyclic or resilient modulus testing in accordance with AASHTO T274, the load amplitude is 500 lbf (2.5 kN); frequency response is monotonic to 3 Hz.

Lateral pressure is controlled by an identical regulator.

Back pressure for the cap and pedestal and cell pressure are controlled independently–for permeability testing–by two identical monotonic electro-pneumatic regulators.

As the computer software controls all four regulators, any stress path can be readily selected.

Volume Change and Permeability

Two interface devices measure movement of permeant into and out of specimen. Volume change is measured electronically in the pedestal interface to a precision of 0.01ml in its entire capacity of 100ml. This is read out on EDDIs and fed back to the computer for processing.

K Testing

A major feature is the capability to perform K tests automatically. The necessary control and program elements are provided so that any value for K can be selected including Ko, K minimum and K>1, the latter being an extrusion test and the former a one dimensional consolidation test with K values for zero lateral strain automatically obtained.

Feed Back Sensors

The regulators are controlled by software that accept feedback from pressure transducers measuring lateral, pore and axial pressures. EDDIs feed back axial strain and volume change for a total of 5 feedback circuits.

System Interface

The output from the system’s sensors are conditioned and then received by an IBM PC or compatible computer. Typically the computer is supplied by the user as most laboratories have ready access to a variety of systems. The computer is used to receive and store real time data in its memory and issue control signals as set up by the user friendly software provided. The software also directs the computer to perform other functions such as data reduction, data processing, etc. PC and interface cards, although not included, can be supplied as an option.

Software

The current software package includes the following:

Back pressure saturation.
Electronic monitoring of volume change.
Consolidation-isotropic, anisotropic, Ko, K minimum and K>1.
Static testing–controlled strain, stress, pore pressure gradient–drained and undrained.
Load capacity 2,000 lb.
Stress path loading with any path possible due to open ended cell design.
Cyclic loading–stress programmed.
Automatic data acquisition, reduction and drafting.

 

S6019 Triaxicon Chassis Complete

This contains all necessary components for performing cyclic and or stress path triaxial testing as previously described less pressure source and computer. Platens and porous stones for 2.875" (73mm) specimens are included. Dimensions 26x16x60" high. 4" and 6" cell are placed next to chassis.
