S2216. Direct Shear Apparatus, Computer Controlled

This direct shear apparatus allows for computer control of both shear and normal stress. Strain control testing is available through PID feedback control. The software allows the user to change speed and direction at any time during the test. Otherwise, it is identical to S2215A.

Computer control is also available for control of the normal stress. This will permit the user to hold vertical deflection to zero while shearing the specimen. Also, progressive larger normal loads can be programmed as part of the shearing stage or PID feedback control based on vertical displacement. Full data acquisition software is included with S2216.

** All pneumatically loaded machines except Geotest measure applied pneumatic load. Only Geotest measures actual load. Although applied load remains constant due to a precision regulator, the actual load often changes during shearing. To maintain a constant actual normal load the following accessory is offered.

S2215A.30 Normal Load Electronic Feed Back Control

This control will maintain normal load at set value until specimen fails in shear. It can be specified at time of purchase or added to existing machine.

S2215A Direct-Residual Shear

Geotest direct-residual shear machines combine accuracy and reliability of dead load with the flexibility of pneumatic normal loading. This is accomplished by using a small built-in load cell to measure the actual normal stress being applied to a specimen. No other machine offers this option.

Normal load is regulated by a precision regulator. Normal load can be applied through a range of 2 to 2,250 lbf (10N to 10kN) due to a second mini-cylinder mounted on the upper cross arm.

Geotest offers 3 different direct-residual shear machines with the following distinguishing features.

Applying the consolidation load pneumatically** means that virtually any sample size can be accommodated without changing weight sets, as is necessary on lever loaded units. Normal loads can be maintained within 1% at any setting and can be applied quickly. There is no effect from ambient vibration. Normal loads down to 2 lbf can be applied with actual load measured to a precision of 0.1 lbf (1N) by means of a load cell and digital display. Two cylinders permit loads of as little as 2 lbf (10N) all the way up to 2,250 lbf (10kN). Only 1 cylinder is used on S2213A .

Performing residual shear tests is automatic. The operator sets a maximum travel and then begins the shear test. When the preset point is reached, the machine automatically reverses direction and continues in the opposite direction past the starting point to the same distance. At that point the machine again reverses direction and goes forward to the first starting point where it again reverses automatically. This process continues until the test is concluded. Total travel in either direction can be set from 0-0.9" (23mm). Thus, even if a 4" (100mm) shear box is used, it is still possible to obtain 20% strain.

All parts in contact with water are naval bronze with some screws of stainless steel.

The entire shear apparatus is table top. There are no hangers or weights to store. Normal loads are applied pneumatically and displayed on a digital readout in 0.1 lbf (1N) increments on all models to a capacity of 2,000 lbf (10kN).

Shearing is done at a constant rate of strain in a drive mechanism identical to that used on Geotest triaxial compression machines. An electronic speed control stabilizes and regulates speed of the electric motor despite fluctuations in supply line voltage and in the mechanical load driven by the motor. A rapid return feature permits quick repositioning at end of test.

The upper half of the shear box is held stationary by a load cell which measures the shearing force on the sample. Extreme care in manufacturing insures that the line of thrust and the axis of the load cell coincide. The shear box rides on stainless steel roller ball bearings and hardened and ground tool steel tracks. Shearing and residual stress is also displayed on a built-in digital display, in 0.1 lbf (1N) increments to 2,000 lbf (10kN).

The outer shear box (housing) is cast and machined from naval bronze with grooves at bottom for drainage of saturation water. The inner shear box is composed of 2 pieces also machined from naval bronze. Any size shear box up to 4x4" (100x100mm) can be provided.

Geotest machines are manufactured totally in the U.S.A. Should there be malfunction in a motor or control, service depots in most major cities are available.

All models digitally display normal and shear stress. S2215A measures shear stress to an accuracy of 0.1 lbf (1N). S2213A measures normal strain and shear strain respectively with 0.5" and 1" travel dial indicators. S2215A is all digital, measuring strain with electronic digital dial indicators (EDDIs) for automatic data acquisition as each readout has its own output with plug-in connections to a PC.

Speed range (strain rate) is 0.00003 to 0.15 inch (0.0007 to 3.8mm) per minute. Actual strain rate is digitally displayed on all models and is accurately set and reproduced by use of the 10-turn graduated potentiometer. Speed is controlled to better than ±1% of set point.

All shear machines include 2.5 diameter by 1" or 60mm by 25mm shear box, cutting shoe and coarse porous stones for gripping specimen. Other size accessories as well as sample extruders can be provided with corresponding adjustment of price. We can also add the 2nd mini-cylinder to any earlier Geotest machine. Request information.

S2215A and S2216 report values in either English or SI units and are immediately convertible. When ordering S2213 , specify if reporting is to be in English or SI units.

All displays except rate of strain on S2215A have outputs fed into a standard connector at rear of apparatus. A connecting cable, data acquisition card and software provided allows input of control parameters, specimen and project data as well as real time display of load/deformation, consolidation curves in graphical and digital form and data storage in ASCII format.

Measurements are 30x16x18" (762x406x457mm). Standard voltage requirements are 115/60/1; for 230/50/1, add "-3" to cat. no. Specify if calibration in SI units is desired. The following models are now available.

Note that due to use of only one cylinder, S2213A can apply normal loads from 30 to 2,000 lbf (133N to 10kN). Normal load range of S2215A and S2216 is 2 to 2,000 lbf (9N to 10kN).

S2238W1 Direct-Residual Shear Windows Program Update

This program will update 2003 and older S2215A machines now employing a DOS based program. This version includes no hardware and must be run on a computer with an ISA card digital I/O. This program provides real time display of load/deformation, consolidation curves in graphic and digital form and data storage in ASCII format.

S2238W2 is same as above but includes a PCI card for use on newer computers.

S2239 Direct Shear Post Processing Software

This option is offered for S2215A and other direct-residual shear apparatus with suitable transducers.

All program input, such as control parameters, specimen and project data, is accomplished through simple and intuitive interactive menus. Online help is available at all times.

The data acquisition/control program provides real time display and post processing of test data:

  • Sample consolidation curves (log time or square root time).
  • Load/deformation curves.
  • Printing of engineering reports with data reduction, specimen parameters and strength results in customized formats according to user’s requirements.
  • Simultaneous data acquisition and display of more than one shear device.
Graphical data may be displayed to the computer screen or directed to a hardcopy device. Standard hardcopy devices at maximum resolution are supported in both black and white and color. Most popular dot matrix and laser printers are supported. Plots may also be output in a form which is readable by most word processors. This negates the need to cut and paste in reports.

The software requires a PC compatible computer with a 386 or better processor operating under DOS 3.1 or higher. Native OS2 versions of the program are available and require OS2 2.x or higher. A minimum of 2 MB of memory with 1 MB available extended memory, a graphics card and a hard drive are required for the DOS version. While not required, a VGA or better graphics card and a math coprocessor are recommended for optimum performance. A free demo disk is available upon request.
