The Iowa Stepped Blade Apparatus was also developed by Professor R. Handy and associates at Iowa State University (see S1000). Test results obtained with the stepped blade conform closely to the Menard Pressure Meter and the Self-Boring Pressure Meter when evaluating in-situ soil stresses.
The stepped blade apparatus, by having 4 separate pressure sensors, factors out the effect of blade thickness making the procedure very simple to perform and interpret. A detailed brochure and ASCE reprint describing the Ko stepped blade apparatus is available for the asking.
A standard equipment package includes 2 blades and carrying case, console, 100 ft. nested high pressure line and all necessary accessories. A high pressure source not to exceed 300 psi (2,000 kPa) and regulator are required.
